Recent Audio Picks!
I am a big fan of milliblog.com.Famous for it's 100 word audio reviews,it has pulled me in completely.Highly appreciable work.Am copying an idea of Milliblog's to post my own recent audio favourites:
1.Aval apadi ondrum azhagillai-Ranjith,Vinith Srinivas,Janaki Iyer-Vijay Antony-Angadi Theru
The song is instantly likeable because of some catchy lines by Na.Muthukumar.A sweet melody with hybrid lyrics(poetic at times, colloquial at times).Vijay Antony springs a surprise after songs(?) like "Nakka Mukka" and "New Age Aathichudi".
2.Kannil theriyum vaanam-G.V.Prakash-G.V.Prakash-Angadi Theru
The initial instrumentation is a complete lift from Rahman's "Dreams on fire".Otherwise the song works big time.Gives one a complete Rahman feel throughout.Interesting to hear a song on poverty and hunger done in a grand manner.
3.Naandhan Goppanda-Larson Cyril,Sathyanarayana and Chorus-James Vasanthan-Pasanga
A complete fun song.Reminds you of the Ilayaraja of "Anjali".("Motta Maadi","Something").
The video is great with amazing choreography. These pasanga dance well than our big heroes.
4.Oru Vetkam Varudhe-Naresh Iyer,Shreya Ghosal,James Vasanthan-Pasanga
Feels like a heavy downpour in this hot May climate.Beautifully sung and delightfully shot(My choice for the beautifully shot song of the year),this feels better than "Kangal Irandal".James Vasanthan is here to stay.
5.Ulagam Ipo-Ilayaraja-Ilayaraja-Azhagarmalai.
No one expected Ilayaraja to fill Rahman's absence from the Tamil audio world. After the masterful "Naan Kadavul" and the breezy "Nandhalala",this is hattrick for Raja. What a composition Sir!Salute to thee!
Azhagarmalai has all trappings of a typical Raja album. One gets transferred to those days when Rahman was still doing ad jingles,Yuvan was a child and Harris was memorising church choir songs(to be used in films later). The days when Raja was still the emperor!Raja is conquering back his kingdom and how!
Note 1:Recent Yuvan favourites have been posted in "Ilayaraja's Ilaya Raja".
Note 2:"Thoranai" was disappointing.Decent foot tapping tunes alright.Yet Manisharma is yet to come out of the "Malaikottai" hangover.
