That Number Called 33!
Shilpa's views on the women's reservation bill made me read a lot on it and subsequently conclude that the bill is indeed a welcome one.
*Think of a parliament with 180 odd women MPs.It is indeed a sight to savour.More women, less trouble for the speaker.
*We will have more emphasis on women-oriented issues(Female infanticide, women's health). The men will repeatedly raise these issues in parliament just to get a loud approval from those 33%.
*Yes,there will be Jayapradas with poor attendance.Yes,there will be Gandhi Azhagiris putting proxy attendance for their illustrious husbands. But there will also be Hemavathis who put public toilets before real estates. If the women's reservation in Panchayats is any indication, then we cannot do any better than pushing the bill through soon in Lok sabha.
*This bill is more a symbolic one to enhance Sonia's image as the next Indira. It is a welcome one because considering the strong followers all over the country, all that India needs is a strong leader.A stronger Sonia minus Indira's arrogance can work wonders for India.
*Thanks to the bill,we got the defining image of the year already. The communist Left and the Hindutva Right last came together to fight for India's independence.63 years on,they are together again.Let us not be narrow minded to call it as political opportunism.
But women's empowerment has a long way to go with proper focus on women's education and health.Mere symbolisms would not suffice.
Giant leap for woman kind? Not really. But certainly a step forward in the right direction.
I would be extremely proud and happy to see the women of our country being truly empowered and taking proper steps for progressive development. Hemavathi's story is great! I do hope we have more such individuals who, irrespective of gender, will work for the betterment of the society.
ReplyDelete"The men will repeatedly raise these issues in parliament just to get a loud approval from those 33%"
- Isn't that spoiling the very purpose of raising issues in the Parliament??!! Just to get the females' approval and not due to a serious concern about the prevailing problems!
The Left and The Right came together to free India from Foreigners, Yes! But are the fruits of independence enjoyed by all Indians today? One section suffers from abject poverty. One seems to be oblivious of the Pride in belonging to India and is interested in making a living abroad (again under some Foreign rule!). The remaining people like us live with a clear knowledge of the extent of corruption and other evils in this so-called independent society. Though we all are proud of our Independent status, we know that we still have a long way to attain satisfaction from it. Will the Bill also make us proud but unsatisfied with the effects some 60 odd years from now??
P.S.: If this comment resembles a mini-post that is boring, Sorry :)
Ans 1:Forget the purpose.Serious issues will be raised for sure. That is what is required I feel.
ReplyDeleteAns 2:I just wanted to mean that the Left and Right never come together.I did not expect you to take a light comment on such a serious note.
'The communist Left and the Hindutva Right last came together to fight for India's independence'- I hope my guess of where/why this reference is made here and the 'from where?' will point to Arun...Or won't it?
