Signs Of Trouble!
I have been reading Katherine Frank's biography of Indira Gandhi for some days. After the initial stupor in which Indira's tryst with education is discussed in "yawn-yawn" detail, the book picks amazing pace when Indira transforms from a Nehru to a Gandhi.Just sample this intricately constructed passage which sounds prophetic of the troubles Indira underwent later:
Finally,at about 9:30 that morning, the doctor emerged and said,'Well,I saved her...The kid's all right but Mrs Gandhi had a terrible time and lost a lot of blood.'Then he turned on his heel, leaving Feroze and Krishna to find out from a nurse that the baby was a boy.
Indira,in fact, had suffered a massive haemorrhage and had nearly died. When Feroze went into her room, they found a white,semi-conscious figure on the bed.'With all her blood drained away, she seemed not to be alive'.It was several days, however, before she was declared out of danger.
Sanjay Gandhi had arrived in the world. From the start,he was big trouble.
Indira Gandhi remains the most intriguing individual ever in India's history.I am eagerly waiting for an authentic portrayal of her on celluloid.I strongly feel that only Maniratnam can do justice to such a project.(Remember "Iruvar"?)Waiting.
