Why Rahman Why?!
It is not often that I have a bone to pick with Rahman.The last time such a thing happened was before the release of Roja's audio.Even when my friends said that VTV songs were ordinary,I remained silent only to see them hum "anbil avan" a month later and have the last laugh.But with the Semmozhi Maanadu song(or Tamil Anthem or Ulaga Tamil Maanadu song or whatever),Rahman has done some grave mistakes.
1.Instead of setting tune to previously written lines,the melody should have been composed first.The song flows like a collection of catchy hooks rather than a single celebratory piece of Tamil.
2.Blaaze's rap is incredibly out of place.In a song honouring Tamil,the rap stands out sorely.To enhance the crime, the rap follows a soothing Nadhaswaram piece.Blaaze pronounces "Pugazh" as "Pugal".
3.Sruthi Haasan's voice is unique alright but she somehow spoils the serenity of the song.Is she singing the lines or crying for having been given the last slot to sing?
4.More native instrumentation would have worked wonders.
Yes,there are unique selling points like TMS,P.Susheela,Yuvan and the catchy "Semmozhiyana Tamilmozhiyam" refrain but still it falls short of a complete anthem.Had it been a movie number,it would have topped the charts.Ilayaraja fans are vindicated for once that their man deserved to compose the song.Meanwhile,Rahman fans like me have to console ourselves saying Ella Puga"l"um Rahmanuke!
P.S:The song composed for the golden jubilee celebrations of Gujarat by Rahman is more befitting for an anthem.

ReplyDeleteBut I realized that it might actually signify the increasing westernization of Thamizh/Tamil. It may have been declared a classical language. But I wonder how many of the so-called native speakers of the tongue (like us) actually use the language properly. Forget the "thooya thamizh" we saw in old films like Thiruvilayadal. We can't even speak a couple of sentences in our normal life without using an english word here or there! Sad.
And as long as we keep debating abt the future of Tamil in English,Tamil has no future :)

நாம் குண்டு சட்டியில் குதிரை ஒட்டிக்கொண்டிருப்பதை விட்டு விட்டு "திறமான புலமையெனில் வெளிநாட்டோர் அதனை வணக்கம் செய்தல் வேண்டும்" என்று மகாகவி பாரதி சொன்னதை உண்மையாக்க வேண்டும். உலக அளவில் நம் பார்வையை விரிவாக்கவேண்டும் . உலகமே விரும்பி கேட்கும்படி இசையை குழைத்துக் கொடுக்க வேண்டும். அதைத் தான் ரகுமான் செய்திருக்கிறார்.
ரகுமானின் இந்த திறமையால் தான் சிவாஜி படத்தில் வரும் "பல்லேலக்கா " பாடலை இன்று வெள்ளைக்காரகள் குழு இசையில், மொழி தெரியாமலே பாடிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள். இதற்கான ஆதார வீடியோவை கீழ்க் கண்ட இணைப்பில் தயவுசெய்து காண்க:
