What to read for GS Mains - Paper 1 ?
Though I have not got a great score in any of the first three GS papers in Mains, I am sharing this list of material to be read for each of the papers because if I had read these sources in depth,I could have got a much better score. This article covers paper one . Subsequent articles cover papers two to four of General Studies - Mains. Syllabus is available here.
Indian Culture
1.NCERT book on Indian art (new), NCERT Ancient and Medieval India (old edition)
2.NIOS Indian culture
3. ccrtindia.gov.in
4. GK Today PDFs on Indian Culture.
Modern India (18th century-1947)
1 "Struggle for Indian Indian Independence" by Bipan Chandra
2."A history of Modern India" by Ishita Banerjee-Dube, this covers from 18th century. Though I have not read this book, I went through the sample chapters and found it to be rewarding.
3.NCERT books
So, a selective reading of Spectrum's guide for Geography or Khullar's Indian Geography is recommended.
Other than the above, smart and multidimensional reading of newspapers is mandatory.

1.Mastering modern world history by Norman Lowe ( Covers everything from 1900)

pre-1900 developments, a basic outline is available in Arjun Dev's
"History of the world" and NCERT History books. (For a detailed overview
of pre-1900 history,Jain and Mathur's book is good)
Society,Women,Globalisation :
1.Social
Problems in India by Ram Ahuja is an introductory text but it is
outdated in terms of data. So,it can be supplemented by selective
reading of social issues, women empowerment related articles in The Hindu, Frontline
and other periodicals.

Geography
1.NCERT 9 to 12 - all books
2.Certificate Physical and Human geography by Goh Cheng Leong
3.Geography questions nowadays have become tough and require optional subject-level knowledge. So, a selective reading of Spectrum's guide for Geography or Khullar's Indian Geography is recommended.
